The Optical Interconnect Alliance: What It Is and Why It Matters
In Jason Bodner’s Accelerated AI presentation, he references the Optical Interconnect Alliance as evidence that the photonics transition is not a speculative bet but an industry-wide commitment. The Alliance includes Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom, Microsoft, Meta, and OpenAI. These are the companies building the AI infrastructure of the future, and they have all agreed that the transition from copper to optical connections inside data centers is necessary and inevitable.
The significance of this alliance cannot be overstated. When the six largest forces in AI computing agree on a technology direction, the market follows. These companies are not just endorsing photonics in principle. They are investing billions to make it happen.
What the Members Are Doing
Each member of the Optical Interconnect Alliance is making concrete investments in photonics:
Nvidia has invested over $7 billion in photonics companies and partnered with Corning to build three optical factories in the United States. Nvidia’s GPU architecture is the foundation of modern AI computing, and the company recognizes that the copper connections between its GPUs are the bottleneck. By investing in photonics, Nvidia is solving its own infrastructure problem.
AMD is building a $280 million photonics research hub. AMD is Nvidia’s primary competitor in GPU design, and its investment in photonics confirms that the technology transition is not specific to one company’s roadmap but is an industry-wide necessity.
Broadcom debuted the industry’s first 400G optical chip, which converts electrical signals to light. Broadcom also designs custom AI silicon for OpenAI, Meta, Anthropic, and Google, and builds the networking switches that let AI chips communicate. Microsoft and Meta are backing nEye, a photonics startup that raised $80 million. These hyperscalers are not just buying photonics components. They are investing in the companies that develop them, which means they want to influence the technology roadmap.
OpenAI is driving demand for photonics through its massive computing requirements. OpenAI filed an S-1 for a September listing at a $1 trillion-plus valuation, and the capital from that IPO will accelerate AI infrastructure spending, including photonics.
Why the Alliance Exists
The Optical Interconnect Alliance exists because the copper bottleneck is a shared problem. Every company building AI systems faces the same issue: data moves between GPUs over copper wires, and copper is slow. Electrons in copper travel at less than 1 percent of the speed of light. They generate heat, consume significant power, and cannot keep up with the bandwidth demands of modern AI workloads.
Photonics solves this by using light instead of electricity. Light travels at 124,000 miles per second, carries far more data, barely uses power, and does not generate heat. The Alliance is the institutional confirmation that this transition is real. When Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom, Microsoft, Meta, and OpenAI all commit to the same technology direction, it is not a marketing campaign. It is a strategic decision backed by billions of dollars in investment.
Additional Evidence
Beyond the Alliance members, other major investors are backing photonics:
- Ayar Labs raised $500 million from ARK Invest and Sequoia Capital.
- Bill Gates has personally invested over $200 million in two photonics companies.
- Elon Musk will need to integrate photonics for SpaceX’s planned fleet of one million AI satellites.
These are not speculative bets. They are the kind of capital deployments that happen when the smartest investors in the world see a technology shift coming.
What It Means for Investors
The Optical Interconnect Alliance is the strongest piece of structural evidence in Bodner’s presentation. It confirms that the photonics transition is not one presenter’s opinion but an industry-wide strategic priority. The companies that supply the optical components, networking switches, and silicon photonics transceivers will be the primary beneficiaries.
Bodner reveals Broadcom (AVGO) for free as the most direct large-cap play.
