What Hypersonic Means
Hypersonic weapons are vehicles that travel faster than Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound. That speed, combined with the ability to maneuver in flight, makes them far harder to intercept than a ballistic missile that follows a predictable arc. They arrive fast, change course, and give defenders very little time to react.
There are two broad families. Hypersonic glide vehicles ride a rocket to the edge of space and then glide, while hypersonic cruise missiles power themselves through the atmosphere. Both are difficult to build, and even harder to test, which is why the Pentagon has made them a top priority over the past few years.
Why the Pentagon Is Spending
The spending logic is straightforward. China and Russia have both tested hypersonic weapons and claim to have fielded some, which puts pressure on the United States to keep pace. That pressure shows up as funding for development, testing, and eventually fielding these systems.
Testing is the bottleneck. Before a hypersonic weapon can be deployed, it has to be flown many times under controlled conditions, and those test flights are expensive and complicated. The infrastructure to run them has not kept up with the ambition to build the weapons, which created a specific problem for the Pentagon to solve.
The Test Bed Problem
The core challenge is that hypersonic testing requires specialized ranges, instrumentation, and the ability to recover data from a vehicle flying at Mach 5 and above. Traditional test ranges were built for slower aircraft and ballistic missiles, so they do not fully cover what hypersonic programs need.
The Pentagon’s answer was to consolidate the effort into a single program called MACH-TB, the Multi-Service Advanced Capability Hypersonic Test Bed. Rather than each service building its own test capability, one contractor runs a shared test bed that supports multiple programs at once. That consolidation is why a single award for this work is so significant.
Kratos and MACH-TB
Kratos Defense & Security Solutions won the MACH-TB contract, a five-year award worth roughly $1.45 billion announced in January 2025. For context, that is about a full year of Kratos’s current revenue, which shows how central this one program has become to the company.
Kratos is the lead integrator on the test bed, coordinating the flight tests that hypersonic programs need to progress. The company already had a footprint in drone and missile work, which gave it the clearances and past performance to win the award. It is a legitimate franchise: once the Pentagon builds a test capability around a single contractor, it is not cheap to move that work elsewhere.
Who Else Is in the Mix
Kratos is not the only name in hypersonics. The big primes, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and RTX, all have hypersonic development programs and are building the actual weapons that MACH-TB will help test. Kratos sits in a slightly different position: it tests the systems rather than primarily building the weapons.
That distinction matters. Testing is a steadier, more infrastructure-like business than weapon development, because it is needed across every program rather than tied to winning one production contract. The Road to Fielding
None of this happens quickly. A hypersonic weapon can take years to move from test flights to a fielded system, and the test bed itself has to be built out before the testing can even ramp up. That timeline is why the MACH-TB award is a five-year contract rather than a single purchase.
For investors, that means the payoff from hypersonic testing is a multi-year grind, not a near-term catalyst. The revenue arrives steadily as the Pentagon funds test campaigns, which is good for predictability and poor for anyone expecting a quick pop.
The Honest Read
Hypersonic weapons are a real, funded Pentagon priority, and the testing infrastructure to develop them is a genuine bottleneck that someone has to fill. Kratos won the key contract for that work, which is a strong franchise and a credible reason for a defense-focused pitch to feature the company.
The caution is the same one that applies across the “Galactic Supply Chain” pitch: the theme is real, but the price can run ahead of it. Hypersonic testing is a long, multi-year grind rather than an overnight windfall, and the stock’s valuation already reflects much of the enthusiasm.
