What the Next Generation Interceptor is
The Next Generation Interceptor, usually shortened to NGI, is the program to replace the ground-based interceptors that form the backbone of U.S. homeland missile defense. Those interceptors, based in silos in Alaska and California, are the midcourse layer that would attempt to destroy an incoming intercontinental ballistic missile in space, before it re-enters the atmosphere.
The existing interceptors are aging and were designed against a narrower threat than the one the United States now faces. NGI is the answer: a new interceptor built to counter a more capable and more numerous threat set, including countermeasures designed to defeat the current system.
The program sits squarely inside the Golden Dome ambition. A continental shield is only as good as its midcourse layer, and NGI is that layer’s next generation.
Why the program exists
The ground-based interceptors in service today were fielded in the mid-2000s and have been upgraded incrementally since. Their kill vehicles, the part of the interceptor that separates in space and collides with the warhead, are the subject of well-documented reliability questions and limited test records.
A larger, more modern threat has changed the math. More capable missiles, more warheads, and decoy technology have all made a single, static midcourse defense less certain. NGI is designed to restore that certainty with a faster interceptor, a more reliable kill vehicle, and the ability to discriminate real warheads from decoys.
That is the strategic case, and it is why the program has survived across administrations. Homeland missile defense is one of the few defense priorities with durable bipartisan support.
How the program is organized
NGI is a competitive development program. The Missile Defense Agency selected two prime teams to build competing designs, a structure borrowed from the commercial world’s “fly-off” approach that keeps two credible options in development as long as possible before a winner is chosen or both are fielded.
The prime contractors lead the integration, but a program this complex pulls in a long tail of suppliers. Guidance systems, propulsion, seekers, software, and the ground systems that command the interceptors all come from a network of subcontractors and component makers.
That supplier network is where a mid-tier company like Voyager fits. Its contribution is real but defined by its position beneath the primes, not by program leadership.
Voyager’s contribution
Voyager contributes to the Next Generation Interceptor program, which is why the name shows up in the “Galactic Supply Chain” pitch. The company’s broader missile defense footprint includes multiple Golden Dome contracts and work on the Standard Missile interceptor through a Raytheon contract, and about 84 percent of its revenue comes from the U.S. government.
The pattern is consistent: Voyager is a focused defense supplier whose revenue and backlog move with the programs it feeds into, and NGI is one of the largest. Its defense backlog stood at $275.3 million at the time of the pitch, up 54 percent year over year.
The important qualifier is that NGI is still in development and testing. Contribution to the program is a foot in the door and a named position, but it is years from translating into production-scale revenue, and the final shape of the program is not yet settled.
The timeline and the risk
NGI is on a schedule that runs well into the back half of this decade and beyond. Development programs of this scale move from design to flight testing to a production decision over many years, and each stage carries the risk of delay, redesign, or a shift in requirements.
That is the honest tension for investors. The program is real, well-funded, and strategically durable, but it is not a near-term earnings event. A stock that prices in NGI production today is paying for hardware that will not be delivered for years.

The two-team race and what it decides
The NGI program is being run as a competition between two prime teams, a structure the agency uses to keep pressure on cost and schedule while two designs mature in parallel. That competition shapes the supplier picture, because the companies beneath each prime stand to gain or lose work depending on which design advances.
For a mid-tier supplier like Voyager, the competitive structure is a double edge. Being inside a program with two primes means revenue depends not only on the program surviving but on the specific team the company feeds into staying in the race.
The end state matters too. If the agency selects a single design for production, one supplier chain wins and the other winds down. If both designs are fielded, as has happened on past programs, the work splits. Either outcome is years away, but it is the decision that ultimately determines how much NGI revenue flows to any given contractor.
The bottom line
The Next Generation Interceptor is the homeland missile defense program with the clearest strategic case, and Voyager’s participation is a genuine, if supplier-level, position inside it. The catch is the same one that defines defense investing broadly: the program is a decade-scale effort, and the gap between a development contract and production revenue is where expectations run ahead of results.
