Sabine Royalty Trust and Its 2024

Sabine Royalty Trust, ticker SBR, is one of the longest-running oil and gas royalty trusts on the NYSE. It holds royalty interests in producing properties, mostly in Texas, and distributes essentially all of its income to unitholders on a monthly schedule. That pass-through structure is the defining feature of the trust, and it is why SBR shows up in searches around royalty income.

For 2024, the story was the same one that shapes every royalty trust: distributions tracked oil and natural gas prices, and they also reflected the natural decline of the underlying wells. Royalty trusts do not replace their reserves the way an operating company can, so their payouts tend to drift lower over time even when commodity prices hold up. The 2024 environment, with oil prices broadly supportive but natural gas soft, produced the kind of mixed result that is typical for the vehicle.

Why Royalty Trusts Fade

The structural reality of a royalty trust is that it is a wasting asset. The trust owns a fixed set of interests, and every barrel produced is one that will not be produced again. Some trusts hold working interests that let them participate in new drilling, which slows the decline, but the long-run trend for most is downward.

That is the key difference from a company like Texas Pacific Land, the “29% Account” pick, which converted to a corporation in 2021 and can reinvest, acquire acreage, and develop water rights. A trust cannot do those things. We contrast the structures in our Sabine Royalty Trust explainer and our PBT stock piece.

What It Means for Income Investors

SBR is a legitimate way to collect a monthly oil-and-gas payout, but treat it as a depleting income stream, not a growing one. The high distributions are real, and so is the decline. For a full rundown of the trust universe, see our list of oil and gas royalty trusts.
