The AI Cash Bubble: What Bodner’s Sell Alert Means

One of the bonus reports in Jason Bodner’s Accelerated AI presentation is titled “Sell Alert: 10 Popular Stocks You Must Drop Immediately.” The report identifies stocks that Bodner believes will be disrupted by the photonics transition, and the framing is designed to create urgency: “Your financial advisor might still be recommending them.”

This is the most fear-based element of the presentation, and it deserves careful consideration. The underlying idea is sound: if photonics replaces copper inside AI data centers, some companies that are currently favored by the market could be displaced. But the marketing framing is more aggressive than the analytical content likely justifies.

The Thesis Behind the Sell Alert

Bodner’s argument is that AI has “slammed headfirst into a wall.” The wall is copper. The companies that depend on the current copper-based infrastructure could face a reckoning when photonics replaces copper. He says a “completely different group of AI firms” will be crowned new kings and that the photonics transition will “leave the Magnificent Seven in the dust.”

The logic is as follows. If the bottleneck in AI is the copper connections between GPUs, and photonics solves that bottleneck, then the companies that benefit from the copper bottleneck could lose their advantage. This could include companies that make copper-based networking components, companies that supply cooling solutions for copper-generated heat, and companies whose valuations depend on the current architecture of AI data centers.

The historical precedent supports the idea. During the internet transition from copper to fiber, many companies that were dominant in the copper era did not survive the transition. The companies that built the fiber-optic infrastructure, like Equinix (+37,000 percent) and Netflix (+188,471 percent), were the winners. The companies that stayed tied to copper were the losers.

What We Think About the Framing

The “10 stocks you must drop immediately” framing uses fear-based marketing that is standard in the newsletter industry but somewhat at odds with Bodner’s otherwise analytical approach. The word “immediately” creates false urgency. The photonics transition will take years, not days. And the idea that your financial advisor is recommending the wrong stocks is designed to undermine professional advice, which is a common newsletter marketing technique.

That said, the underlying analytical point is valid. Technology transitions do create winners and losers. The companies that are dominant in one era are often not the ones that dominate the next. Bodner’s Acceleration Curve framework, which we explain in our copper to fiber article, shows that the second wave of a technology transition is typically led by different companies than the first wave.

The Buy Side

The sell alert is paired with buy-side recommendations that are more compelling. Bodner reveals Broadcom (AVGO) for free as the most direct large-cap play on the photonics transition. Broadcom designs custom AI silicon, builds networking switches, and debuted the industry’s first 400G optical chip. Its AI revenue was $10.8 billion last quarter, up 143 percent year over year. For more on Broadcom, see our Broadcom stock article.

The three bonus picks behind the paywall offer higher-upside exposure:

  1. A secret weapon inside every major AI data center. 10x smaller than Broadcom. Sales up 35 percent.
  2. The purest photonics play. Moves data as light between data centers. $6 billion in sales. 20x smaller than Broadcom.
  3. Builds parts that turn electrical signals to light. Nvidia partnership. “Next trillion-dollar company.” Sales up 42 percent.

The Broader Context

The idea of an AI cash bubble is not unique to Bodner. Several analysts have raised concerns about AI stock valuations, particularly among the Magnificent Seven. The concern is that the market has priced in continued AI growth at a rate that may not be sustainable if the infrastructure bottleneck is not resolved.

Bodner’s contribution is to identify the specific bottleneck (copper) and the specific solution (photonics). This is more useful than generic “AI stocks are overvalued” commentary. If you know what the bottleneck is, you can identify which companies are most at risk from the transition and which are best positioned to benefit from it.

Considerations

The sell alert should be understood as a marketing device that wraps a legitimate analytical point. Technology transitions do create losers, and investors should think about which companies are most exposed to the copper-to-photonics shift. But the “immediately” framing is designed to sell newsletters, not to reflect the actual timeline of the transition. The photonics shift will take years, and there is time to evaluate positions carefully.

Bodner’s track record, including Nvidia at $4.50 and Vertiv before Goldman Sachs, suggests he has genuine insight into infrastructure shifts. For more on his background, see our Jason Bodner profile. For what you get with the subscription, see our Inflection Point article.
