What Lifetime Income Actually Means

Lifetime income is exactly what it sounds like: a stream of payments that lasts for the rest of your life. The classic sources are Social Security, a traditional pension, and income annuities. The defining feature is longevity protection. You do not outlive the money, no matter how long you live.

The tension is what you give up to get it. A pension or annuity trades a lump sum for guaranteed payments, which means you forgo the upside that a growing portfolio could produce. That tradeoff is the heart of almost every retirement income conversation.

Why It Shows Up in the ASI Fund Pitch

Alexander Green, the Chief Investment Strategist at The Oxford Club and editor of The Oxford Communiqué, frames his ASI Fund presentation around a retirement problem: most 401(k) investors are limited to a handful of conventional funds, and conventional funds may not generate the kind of long-term growth that supports meaningful lifetime income.

The mechanism he points to is real. Executive Order 14330, signed in August 2025, directs the Department of Labor to clarify that plan fiduciaries may include professionally managed alternative-asset funds in 401(k) lineups. Private equity, infrastructure funds, and real assets have historically been walled off from ordinary retirement accounts. That order is the regulatory hook for Green’s broader argument, which we covered in our full ASI Fund review.

The Honest Tradeoff

Lifetime income and the ASI Fund are related but not the same thing. Green is pitching an AI infrastructure fund for retirement accounts, not an annuity. The connection is that a higher-growth retirement balance can eventually be converted into a larger income stream, whether through a drawdown plan or an annuity purchase.

The risk is the same one that applies to any growth-focused retirement strategy: alternatives can amplify returns, but they also carry illiquidity and concentration risk that a target-date fund does not.
